Final Design Solution

Here comes our final idea, a Double Decker Bus with standing bus idea, more doors and conveyor belt in the first storey and changing the seat into bench and put entertainment system for the second storey.

As in Singapore there are quite a lot of elders using the bus and there are also handicap people using the bus, so we are thinking of making the first storey of the bus friendly for the handicap and elder, that we are putting the platform for a wheelchair to enter the bus and a few or likely 4 seats for elder on the first storey. Even the conveyor belt will help people to move in easily and will automatically makes the people who are not moving in to move in when the bus stop.

The second storey is make to fit more passengers while attracting people to come to the second storey by putting entertainment system which are 8 TVs are set on the ceilings. As it is a double decker bus which can take more passengers than the normal bus, it will reduce the number of people for taking the next bus, so people will move in easier even on the next bus.

6 Best Design Ideas

From the 101 ideas that we already make, the teacher ask to choose six best design solution which after that we can try to combine each other and see the pros and cons. Here are my group six best ideas.

First Idea - Make a standing bus, no seat at all
Standing bus will provide more space, because there is no seat at all and people will have no choice but to stand. And this will also reduce the people from not moving in. but there are many cons which people might experience which is tiring, if people have a long journey on the bus, also the elder will be disadvantaged by this standing bus because they need to sit. Not to mention, there is a safety issue which is caused by this standing bus, people will tend to fall when the bus is turning.

Second Idea - Make a conveyor belt inside the bus
This conveyor belt will provide both comforts for the people and the solution for the moving in issue. People won’t have to move to move in, the bus. Once the bus is departing, the conveyor belt will be turned on and people on the front will automatically move to the back which will then provide space at the front. But there is a slight disadvantage in using the conveyor belt, which is people might get stuck in the belt if they are unaware or careless, which will be a big problem if it occurs.

Third Idea - Change the design of the seat from chair into bench
This redesign of seats in the bus will be able to fit more people to because it is a bench, so there’s no limit on how many people should sit in one of the bench. Unlike chairs which is separated one by one.

Fourth Idea - Make more entrance door
More entrance door means it will be so much easier to enter and exit if the bus is full. For example if there is entrance door at both sides, people can get in and out faster. They would not need to squeeze through if there is too many people on the bus. But it will reduce the space inside the bus.

Fifth Idea - Put entertainment at the back of the bus
By putting entertainment like television, music, etc. at the back, people will be attracted to move rather than just standing in front of the bus blocking the way. The bus will also be more interesting. But if they are too comfortable with their entertainment, they could miss the stop that they should be alighting on.

Sixth Idea - Make the bus three stories
By adding one more story to the bus, the bus would be able to accommodate more space for people. The bus will be less crowded than before. But people will have a problem in alighting because it will take long for them to go down to the first story which might cause them to miss their bus stop. And the bus would also have more limited access to areas which has height limit.

101 Ideas of Solution to The Problem

The next step that my teacher told us to do is to make a brainstorming about any possible or even not possible, sense or non-sense ideas of solution to solve the problem at least 101 ideas. This is what I did for the 101 ideas solution.

Observation

In this project my teacher assign every group to make at least two research methodology, thus our group doing the observation for the second research.

As almost all of our group members use the public transport every day, we think that observation is a useful idea to get more reason why people not moving in in the bus. We plan to observe the public transport everyday especially the bus which are our usual transport to school, we are observing for the bus condition in different timing such as normal business hour and the peak hour. We are looking for how people react if they see people not moving in in the bus, which can be their expression or action.

Based on our observation, the amount of people who not moving in in the bus during the peak hour is more than the normal business hour time, when they are all normally busy going to work or rushing to work. On the peak hour, as the people are rushing to work or tiringly going home after work, several of them will just stand all the way where they would like to stand and not thinking or care about the others. Next, people mostly not moving in because they have a lot of things to carry or a heavy thing, they will remain standing near the entrance door or the exit door with their carrier. For another reason, people are standing together with their friends in the path way that blocks the way to the back of the bus as they will stay together all the way until they reach their destination bus stop.

In the other hand, based on our observation, there are some different reaction when they see people blocking the way to the back of the bus. First, the most reaction is nothing, as they will just remain standing in the place and not doing anything. Another one, they will just squeezing in to the back of the bus without scolding the people who blocks the way. The other one, they will feel annoyed as they cannot enter the bus because the front part of the bus is too crowded and the back side of the bus still have some space to stand.
For the bus driver, they have their own different reaction, we have seen them scolding and shouting, telling nicely, feeling annoyed, angry, or even do nothing to the people, another bus driver will then drive fast and roughly as he feel angry.

In conclusion, again from this research, we found out that people wants other people to move in but they do not want to take action like asking them to move in. Thus, we are thinking of changing the bus design for the solution to make the people move by themselves.

Survey

Me and my group mates manage to do some research to find out what is the most suitable solution by doing survey and we would like to show you our survey result.

People in the age between 18 years old to 30 years old who contributed in our survey are 87%, 43% of all participant comes from Indonesia and 22% of them comes from Malaysia. 88% of them use public transport every day and 51% of them only using the public transport once a day. The amount of people who know that they have to move back is 74% and 28% people do not know that they have to move in. As in everyday life, 76% of people always move back and 24% people only stay there and not moving in. From the survey we have, 51% of people have ever not moving back in the bus because they alighting soon. 49% of people feel annoyed and 42% do not care about it when they see people not moving and blocking the walking path. The last one, 73% of people think that we should ask them to move in nicely.

Based on this survey, most of them are in the age of 18 to 30 years old which the majority of them using the public transport every day. Almost all the people already know that they should move in in the bus and move in, but they do not care if other people not moving in in the bus. People are expecting others to tell them to move in instead of taking action by themselves.

After all, we think the possible solution of this problem is changing the design of the bus to make the people move in by themselves.

Case Studies

I did some case studies about people not moving in in the bus, here is what I did.

People Not Move In In the Bus

In some case, the bus entrance in Singapore is only the front entrance and people cannot alight the bus from the rear door, that caused some people may not move in or cannot alight the bus because of people not moving in the bus and remain staying on the entrance or standing near the poles that blocking the way people move to the rear of the bus. Not like in other country, people can enter from both the front and rear door as they can fit all the bus without any people blocking the way on the front part of the bus.

SBS Transit SG Article

A common complaint among bus commuters is overcrowding – especially during peak hours. In fact, SBS Transit received an average of 2.3 complaints every day from commuters who failed to get on board the bus.

But it is not always a case of insufficient capacity. Investigations based on records generated by the bus system on board as well as some public feedback have shown that commuters are sometimes responsible for this situation too – they don’t move to the rear, preferring instead to cram themselves at the front of the bus.

Very often, it is noticed that the front part of the bus is crowded with commuters when there is still space at the rear. This has caused difficulties for commuters at the bus stop to board the bus and sometimes this can result in them being late for their appointments, as they have to wait for the next bus. This prolongs the time spent by the bus at the bus stops which extends the traveling time of the journey for all passengers on board.

In a move to address this situation, SBS Transit today launched a ‘Move to the Rear’ bus campaign. Land Transport Authority Chief Executive BG (NS) Yam Ah Mee, said at the launch: “Today’s event is very timely since as you know, Singapore is working to make public transport a choice mode. Today is an ideal time not only to encourage our fellow commuters to ‘move to the rear of the bus’ for the sake of getting more people on the bus. Today is an ideal time to encourage our fellow commuters to consider all of things happening to make public transport a desirable choice for everyone.

Reasons

Here are some reasons that I and my group think that cause people not moving in in the bus, limited space in the bus and people's unawareness to move in in the bus.

Limited Space in The Bus

Singapore is a busy crowded country that have a huge population, a busy with high population nation will manage the transportation system well for the public transport. Bus is one of the low cost transport that every people in the country would use every day, but as the road have the fixed size, a bus and a normal car will have a fixed size for it and that may cause a limited space for each bus which cannot change the design of a bus for a wider one. A solution which already been applied is making the bus longer by connecting the back side of the bus with another bus like combining two bus into one bus to take more passengers, but different people have different purpose to ride the bus.

The difference of purposes need each amount of spaces, people with a lot of things will decrease some more spaces for other passengers to fit in. In the current time, with the bus size cannot be widened the bus space become more limited as the population is increasing quite a lot each year. Many people could not take the bus especially during the peak hours, too much people is riding the same bus, even if the government increase the number of the bus can cause another problem that makes the road more crowded and will increase the level of the traffic. Even handicap people need more space than the normal people to fit in their wheelchair.

In conclusion, the amount of space in a bus is limited which is hardly to increase it as the road have all the same size. A bus need more space to take more passengers on it, like people who brings many things and others.

People’s Unawareness to Move in in The Bus

Another possible reason why people not moving in I the bus, the unawareness of the bus passengers to move in. At the present time, some people maybe do not know if they should move in as they are might be a new citizen of this Singapore or even a tourist, thus they are standing wherever they like and blocks the walk path for others to move in. A children also might be unaware to move in as the way of their thinking is different or their parents have not teach them about it. Another acceptable reason as they do not know that they should move in, they are the type of people who not paying attention to the campaign about moving in in the bus which already been held.

In the other hand, people unawareness to move in can be caused even they know that they should moving in to give more space for another passengers to ride in to the bus. Many reason can make people not moving even they know it, people might pretend that they do not know if they should move in because of the laziness to move in or in a rush as they will be easier to alight the bus if they stand near the entrance or the exit door. Even sometimes people not moving in because they are focusing on their mobile phone or the things they bring which may cause them not to move to the rear side of the bus, stubborn people who held their way of thinking to remain standing on the same place in the bus and will not stand on another place in the bus.

As there are quite a lot people who are unaware to move in in the bus, it is possible if we see people not moving in, we tell them to move in politely.

Empathy

The next assignment for this subject from our teacher is making empathy about our group problem.

Empathy means to consider as other people, that if I was that person, what am I feeling or going to do. For my group problem, I would like to empathize as a bus driver, a passenger (that know they should move in and the one who do not know that they should move in) and a handicap person.

As a bus driver
-         I will be confused as not many people can fit in in my bus
-       I will be angry as I thought that they must already know that they should move in in the bus and they are just standing there and not moving and blocking my other passengers in my bus
-         I will be sad as I want to get more passengers in my bus to make more income for my company

As a passenger (that know they should move in)
-         I will feel uncomfortable
-         I will be angry if someone blocks me and I cannot move in
-         I will be very sad if I am late for school or work because of those people blocking me

As a passenger (that do not know they should move in)
-         I will not think anything
-         I will not feel guilty if I am the one who not moving in and block others

As a handicap
-         I could not move as there are a lot people standing near the exit door
-         I could not enter the bus as people in the bus blocking the driver way to walk to open the wheelchair platform for me

Brainstorming

As the previous post I did, in the following lesson me and my group are assign to do a mind map about what things that cause our problem, thus, "Why people not moving in in the bus?" and this is the mind map we came out with. There are a lot reason why, such as they are too lazy, the bus too crowded, people like to stand near the entrance or exit door, too smelly, and also handicap people unable to move. From those reason we branch out and we write more about how can be like that and we found a lot reasons for it.

People Do Not Moving in in The Bus

Human population increase in every single day, not a small number but a huge one, especially in Singapore, a small country with a huge population which have over five millions people in population that keep increasing every day by the students, workers or tourists. If a small country with a large amount of population that the government do not manage the public transport correctly, there will be a lot traffic jam in the whole country and cause the working quality decreasing. Thus, the public transport is an important things like bus or Mass Rapid Transport (MRT), which are people in Singapore have been using every day. More people will be using the public transport on the peak hours that every people going to school, work and others.

I would concern in the public bus rather than the MRT, because bus can reach more places that MRT cannot reach with a lower fares and it is more reachable. As the bus stop more reachable than the MRT station, more people probably using the bus as they also use the bus to go to the MRT station every day. In the present time, for several time I experience that some people are not moving in as they remain standing on the walking path and blocking others to move in in the bus. It is a simple thing that can cause a big thing like as they block others then less people will ride on the bus or make people squeeze in the front part of the bus which are dangerous if they do not get anything to hold that they might fall down as the bus driver in Singapore usually drive fast. In several times, there are also people do not moving in even when the bus is empty and they like do not care about others, sometimes I might find it annoying that they are blocking others.

In conclusion, I am going to solve the problem as "People Do Not Moving in in The Bus" with my group mates as a school project for a Design Process subject. We would like to find out more why people not moving in in the bus and solve this problem with the research we came out with.
